We’re nearing that point when the desire to set intentions and goals for the year ahead is beginning to kick in. Things like how much money you’d like to make, fitness and health goals, relationship manifestation, a quality or feeling you’d like to cultivate, etc.
I sit down and do this every year. It’s an empowering exercise to truly listen to myself and say what I want. Yet I often feel like I’m taking a major leap into the unknown when I do this as I often have no idea how these things will come to be as they’re far from what I’ve yet experienced or believed I can have.
Besides wishing, hoping, and praying, how can you help the things you want come into your life, especially if they seem outside your current realm of possibility? Here are 5 suggestions.
1. You are partners with life. Focus on doing your part of this dance as well as you can & then allow life do its part.
You are not alone – you are in a deep partnership with life. For this partnership to work gracefully, there’s a division of labor. Your job is to be a good steward of the things in your realm that nobody can take care of except you. Things like eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep, having a clear mind, completing the tasks you’ve been given, keeping your space and home clear, managing your finances well, reading the signs and following the inspiration that’s given to you, educating yourself as needed, developing yourself emotionally and spiritually, and living with integrity.
Life’s job is to provide the synchronicities, connections, and opportunities that bring things about. We waste a lot of time and energy trying to do life’s job when it’s 100% out of our hands to “make” these things happen. But when we take good care of our part of the equation, we let life know we’re serious about truly participating in our lives and we make ourselves ready for what life brings us… because it will.
2. Become a match for what you want.
I’ve had people read me long, detailed lists of things they’re looking for in their next relationship. When they’re done I usually ask: Are you those things? Life is all about resonance. We attract what we match. Things that have no match do not remain in our field. So when you think about the things you want – greater prosperity, a loving, mutually beneficial relationship, excellent health, etc. – ask yourself: Am I a vibrational match for this coming into my life? If not, your work is to raise yourself up to become a match for what you want. This begins by making a greater effort to care for yourself and your life as mentioned in #1 which can raise you up a lot. From there, it’s going deeper into seeing where you have leaks and plugging them. Then, going deeper still, it’s looking at the conditioning, reactions, patterns, and stories you’re operating with and making some changes – i.e. becoming a kick ass shadow stalker. And sometimes it just comes down to the fact that your background, default beliefs are stuck in the past and you need to re-pattern your beliefs to match where you want to go. How? Read this.
3. Create a compelling experiment to move yourself forward.
A few years ago I decided I was sick of being single and wanted to be in a relationship. In considering my relationship track record I saw that I experienced the same sort of disappointment over and over. This signaled to me that a younger part of me was hurt, developmentally stuck, and needed help growing up. So I devised an experiment to learn and grow and it began by getting on OkCupid. Yes, spiritual and emotional growth can happen on OkC! But I didn’t go on dates hoping to “find the one”. I dated to see, through experience, what beliefs, habits, and assumptions I was operating with so I could then take what I learned and help the young part of me grow up.
Becoming a match for what you want usually means you have to grow beyond where you’re at because if you were currently a match for what you want, you’d already have it. So I spent about 14 months dating, reflecting, and growing. There were ups and some seriously unpleasant downs but f-i-n-a-l-l-y I realized, in a moment that was truly a test, that I had become the person I wanted to be with: open, affectionate, transparent, direct, without games, and available. And then… I met my current partner. Can you imagine how you might apply this same approach to what you want to call into your life?
4. Get quiet, listen for inspiration, follow through.
When you’ve been working on being a good steward of the things in your life that only you can care for, when you’ve been working on improving your beliefs and upping your vibe, you’re going to sense life whispering to you. So get quiet, listen, take notes, and follow through on what comes!
I’m a big believer in listening to the muse that guides us. Life can bring us amazing inspiration this way that can take us in wonderful new directions, if we’re willing to follow through. Photography, which is now a huge part of my life, came to me just this way. At first I thought it was a crazy idea – I was busy and I didn’t own or know how to use a camera – but I decided to go with it and my life has radically changed for the positive because of it. Just imagine what could happen if you made this sort of listening a regular thing.
5. Gratitude is the attitude.
The fastest way to open your field and make good things happen is to be grateful for all the blessings you already have in your life. Even challenges are blessings because we can learn so much from them so be grateful for them also. Taking time out daily to genuinely bless and feel gratitude for our lives, as opposed to complain or dwell on what we perceive as being wrong, is like shining a direct light to life saying I see and appreciate you. Just think of how you feel when others say this to you. Doesn’t it make you want to be even more generous with them?
Up up & away!
